Courtney E. Martin is an American feminist, author speaker and social and political activist who was born in December 31, 1979. In this Ted Talk , Courtney talks about how in America we always want more. BEING more. This is mainly something that is found in people in general. She goes on to say; "The biggest danger is achieving a dream that you don't actually believe in." I find this very true in what is seen in every day life. People try to just "get through the day" just so that they can achieve a higher level in their occupation, a higher status, more money, 'respect', etc. More so tilting towards the whole 9-5, decent salary, coming to a loving home type of deal in hopes of a normal lifestyle. This goes well with the narrative of the book In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. In this story, there's this family named the Clutters whom are well-loved by the rest of the neighborhood and lead this "perfect" lifestyle which in turn caused their deaths. A man by the name of Floyd Wells saw this as a sign of great wealth. He was partly right. The Clutters were wealthy, but mostly because Mr. Clutter was a farmer with large land (a ranch) and notoriously payed by check only. Floyd goes as far as telling Dick Hickock that there was a safe in their household (which is really just an assumption because he never actually saw one) that leads to Dick's murderous crime that starts a whole conundrum. I'ts not so much Floyd's fault but more so the fault of the killers. It's very predictable for some people to think that Floyd should not have opened his mouth about something that he knew nothing because now Dick killed the Clutters for nothing. In Floyd's defense he didn't travel for more then 400 miles on a death wish just for a safe that wasn't there. The gun doesn't do harm; it's the hand that pulls the trigger. The biggest difference in who's really to blame is the fact that Dick had other motives that drove him passionately about his archaic plan (honestly it's a hit and run if you think about it) which he further dehumanizes himself and admits to when he said he wanted to rape Nancy. Don't know about you but that in itself added up with the whole family assassination thing seems worse than an assumption that could be made by made anyone. The disillusionment in this whole story was that even a picture-perfect family who seem to be the american dream in itself, can have the worst downfall just like the rest of us. Not to mention that this gets everyone thinking; "If that can happen to people like them, what about us?" The thing is, there is no safe haven and the grass is not always greener over that "white picket fence" as Courtney E. Martin put it. You never know what goes on behind these '#Goals' that you are mislead to be inspired by-just live life and do you.
