Paul J. Zak is an American neuroeconomist, a scientist, prolific author, and public speaker. In this Ted- Talk, Zak speaks out about morality. For 10 years, Zak has researched a "moral molecule" which happen to be oxytocin which is toxin released from both men and women and interestingly enough, goes up when a certain virtue is performed. In Zak's case, it is the virtue of truth. Zak sates; "Poor countries are low trust countries" and followed up with; "If I understand the chemistry of trustworthiness, I might help end world poverty." As wonderful as the statement of ending world poverty is, it's the whole trust connected to morality and increase of oxytocin that is the most fascinating. This virtue in morality is also a theme that is heavily emphasized in the novella Of Mice and Men. The main characters are George and Lennie, and throughout the story line, they endure many obstacles that try to shake up the loyal friendship that they have together. In one instance that was towards the end of the book, the scene involved Lennie (who's a very big guy) behind the bush and waiting for George to arrive and when he finally does arrive, George shoots him right at the back of his head. I admit, not a good thing but morally, is anything always black and white? This scene emphasizes that area that's a shade of grey, which brings out the realism that symbolizes what happens in every day life and even today. The background story is that Lennie accidentally killed Curley's wife when trying to stroke her hair, but- not recognizing his own strength- he tugs too hard which causes the girl to scream and him to panic. With Curley's wife scaring him that he would get in trouble, Lennie covered her face with his hands and accidentally broke her neck. The thing with Lennie is that he's never really a bad person, but instead does bad things with good intentions that can never really be fulfilled. Though in the end, he is not the one who honorarily gets to be have the most morality. Though Lennie is ever so trusting of George and what he has to say, George is the one that has the brains to ultimately let Lennie die 'happily' and at peace , visualizing their dream farm.
